Hope eternal leads to discontent

I love my Scion XB. It gets great gas mileage and has been trouble-free for 18,500 miles now. It has a little rattle in the dash but I've discovered through several Scion forums that there was a technical service bulletin issued for a repair. This is the main reason why I am trying to get service at the dealer again. I've had my oil changed a Jiffy Lube twice and they've been great. The car comes back vacuumed with the windows washed and it all takes just a few minutes. The last time I had Broadway Toyota change the oil, it took most of two hours and the car came back just as dirty as it came in. Were I in charge of the world, I would pay someone minimum wage to clean the cars waiting for service. One person working all day could make a lot of customers happy.

Anyway, so even though they advertise that they have 35 service bays and that no appointment is needed, every time I've tried to get service the first question I've been asked is, "Do you have an appointment?" This time I tried to make an appointment. On Saturday morning I use their online appointment booking system. At 8am, entered all my info and requested a callback. Still waiting. Now I know they have people there on Saturdays. Their advertising says they are open every day of the week. Were I in charge of the world, I would have one of the service clerical staff check the email for service requests at least a couple of times during the day. It's pretty clear though that I'm not in charge of the world.

Got a call back... visit #2 no joy yet...

I left my service request on Saturday morning. On Tuesday I got a call back. I scheduled a service time for basic service and to have the TSB repair addressed. I took the car in and asked about what kind of oil they used. Learning it was only synthetic blend and that full synthetic was an additional $12 a quart ($60) I said do everything but the oil change. They said the car would be ready by 3pm. I questioned that because the TSB says it takes 6+ hours and it was pretty clear the service tech was not up on that.

By 3pm I had a call back that I could get the car. Yes, the techs had confirmed the rattle but they wanted to try some other things before doing all the work specified in the TSB. Why not just fix it the way Toyota says to fix it? What could I do?

I picked up my car, went to JiffyLube and had the oil changed, windows washed, interior vacuumed and full synthetic all for less than $60 and got a great coupon book for free.

One week later I returned the XB to Brodway Toyota so they could try their fix. One hour later after waiting, they said they had ordered the wrong part. I did get them to write on the work order that they had broken one trim piece during the first repair attempt and asked them to order a replacement for that. Now I'm waiting for a call back and we'll take the XB in for it's third visit to have the rattle fixed.

I love my XB. It's quiet (except for the rattle), gets good MPG, is fun to drive, holds lots of people and stuff and has been perfect for more than 18K miles. I'd buy it all over again.

Oh, and the cost for full synthetic, Mobil 1 oil at my local parts store, $5.99 a quart.
